It’s Beginning to look a lot like Christmas!

I absolutely love the holiday season. Thanksgiving starts everything off and then the holiday spirit continues for me right through New Years Day. The Hubs on the other hand does not quite share the same enthusiasm for…well…pretty much anything. So I always have to get him a bit revved up for most things celebratory.

Well you can imagine how much I was taken by surprise when he said, “Hey babe let’s start a tradition for the Saturday after Thanksgiving of getting the tree.  We can make special holiday food, get holiday drinks, and watch a Christmas movie.” I said, “uuuuum I’m sorry what?!?” He then explained how he didn’t necessarily care about these things. But he knows how much joy it brings me. So he wanted to start some special traditions just for us. Well of course that made my day, heck it has made my week! I quickly whipped out my Christmas pinterest board and showed him some of my ideas. He was a good sport and did a pretty good job of pretending that I wasn’t completely boring him with all of it.

When I woke up this morning I wasn’t feeling too well. But I was determined to get our tradition started. Our main objectives were to get the Christmas Tree, get the supplies and make the ornaments, and get a fun Wintery drink! But we needed to eat right? What better to eat two days after Thanksgiving than leftovers!

Thanksgiving Leftovers

I had some leftover turkey, mac and cheese, dressing, and collard greens. He had Greens, ham, turkey, and peach cobbler. Of course we couldn’t drink from anything other than our Christmas mugs!

After we ate we were ready to hit the road! I put on my Grinch shirt, (I always joke that the Grinch reminds me of him since he started off as one and now his heart has grown so big!) I also had an antler headband with real working bells attached that I wore. We decided to make the tree and the drinks our last stops. After going to a couple craft stores and getting all of the supplies that we needed we were off to get our tree! When we got there the guy who worked there said we may want to wait another week or so since the trees that he had were drying out. That would also make them last until Christmas. I was bummed, I mean I was dressed up and everything! It was all good though since  I would rather have it last. So we grabbed our drinks from Coffee Bean and headed home.

Now it was time to start the movie and get to crafting! What was our movie of choice you ask? I wanted him to feel like he had something to look forward to so I let him choose. He picked The Preacher’s Wife (Ok yes I would have picked Elf, or A Christmas Story, or well a lot of other things. But we are compromising right?)

The Preachers Wife

We were able to order a copy from Amazon for $5 so it worked out well. These are our stockings, he wasn’t exactly fond of the sparkly blue, but it went with our scheme. 😉

During the movie I was able to get most of my homemade ornaments done. To make these I relied on a lot of ribbon and stickers from Michael’s. Fortunately they were having a big sale, so I saved a lot on this stuff! Then to supplement them I got some big and small bulbs from Joann’s Fabrics and the 99 cent store. (Hmmm random thought, I wonder if “Michael and “Joann” are married?) I decided I wanted our decorations to be the same colors as our wedding. Fortunately we had some leftover supplies from then and his grandma also gave us some stuff (she made our invites, menus, and an amazing scrap book) This is how they turned out. We still have a few more to make. But I am pretty happy with what we have so far.

Day 1 Ornaments

Custom ornaments can be pretty expensive. I thought I would make my own so that our first Christmas tree would be one of a kind. We even used our wedding invite to fill one. I got the empty bulbs off Amazon.

All in all I think this was a pretty fun and special day. I can’t wait to see what my tree will look like next week. Of course I will be posting pics of that too! What are you favorite Christmas and holiday traditions?
