So how “green” am I really?

In my about me section I mentioned that I try to live a naturally driven and eco aware life. This is something that I am working toward and still learning about. I am definitely not super “granola” or “crunchy” or whatever term you may want to call it. I just see how the things in our environment can affect our health and how we have an impact on the environment. So if there are reasonable ways that I can lessen the impact I think it would be irresponsible for me to not at least try them. To put things in perspective to most of my friends and family members I am crazy for considering the use of cloth diapers or for making my own toothpaste. But to someone like Hey Fran Hey or Mama Natural (two great women that I get some inspiration and ideas from) I may look like a poser.

Here’s a little list to give you an idea of where I’m at right now:

What I currently do or plan to try:

I make my own toothpaste, hair and body oil,body butter, and hand sanitizer.

I use the Crystal for deoderant.

I stopped using scented candles and now use an essential oil diffuser (Lord knows I looooveed me some candles!)

I try to purchase whole wheat options for our food at home.

I always buy hormone free chicken and eventually want to only purchase organic chicken.

I got rid of all of the chemical ridden cleaning products in our home. (This is coming from a person who loved bleach and comet!)

I try not to use the microwave. When I reheat something I try to do it in the oven or on the stove. If I do, I will not microwave something in plastic.

I mainly use stainless steel bowls or glass tupperware to store leftovers.

I do my best to avoid foods with unnatural ingredients like High Fructose Corn Syrup, artificial dyes, and MSG.

I would love to have a “natural” birth in a birthing center with a doula and midwife, I want to use cloth diapers, and glass baby bottles.

I try essential oils first whenever I am sick, or hurt.

I mainly use natural products on my hair. The “craziest” one that I use is probably my Terresentials mud wash.

What I don’t do, won’t do, and what I am still working on:

Cloth Pads for that time of the month.

I use a lot of paper goods to cut down on washing dishes. I also use plastic sandwich bags and such.

I am a bit of a germaphobe so I use toxic sanitizing wipes to clean equipment at work since that’s what they provide.

I eat more processed junk food than I like. Mind you I get it from places like Trader Joe’s so it isn’t as bad. But still.

I eat French Fries like they are going out of style. Seriously I can easily eat these things a few times a week.

I am still trying to find the right natural product for my face (I have mild acne but moderate scarring from it.) I have tried many natural options, but nothing has worked so far. 😦

We eat a lot of turkey bacon and even though the kind from Trade Joes is better for us (no Nitrites) I usually get the cheaper kind  from Target.

I love Chick-Fil-A. Now you might be thinking that they are a healthier fast food option. Nope, they actually use MSG to season their chicken. (Like who do we contact to change that because that’s just dumb!) Check out this and this oh and this!

I take a ton of OTC medicine when I have my “lady times”. I get pretty debilitating cramps and that is the only thing that helps them. However I am still looking for other options as well as testing out essential oil combos.


I hope that this gives you a better idea of where I am on this journey. I felt that this post would possibly be helpful for those of you who are trying to get more proactive in this are as well. I know it can feel a bit overwhelming when you look at blogs like Super Green Superhero or I’m a Better Greener Person Than You or I Only Eat Fruit, Water and Air (I hope that these are not real blog names :)) But the most important part is to remember that awareness is the first step. Then you can work to gradually change the things as you see fit. This doesn’t all have to happen at once. Making some effort is better than none, and as you add changes it will get easier!

  3. So are cloth pads a “don’t do” “won’t do” or a “still working on”? I also agree – diva cup has been the best thing ever for that time of the month. Really cut down on my cramps, too.

      Cloth pads are a don’t do and a won’t do. 😉 I was never really a big fan of pads anyway. I am still learning with the Diva Cup. It definitely has a learning curve. But I have no plans to go back. Less cramps were definitely a big draw for me trying the Diva Cup out. But I haven’t noticed too much of a difference. Hopefully that will change over time though!

      • Hopefully! I feel like it took me a few cycles to get used to it, and even now I’ll go to walk out of the bathroom and need to go readjust lol. Well, if you ever feel like cloth pantyliners as a backup for the cup, I’d totally recommend them. I didn’t think I’d like them and the whole idea grossed me out, but they’re surprisingly comfortable 🙂
